There’s a legend in the village: between the earth and the sky, there exists a bridge too fine to be seen. Only those unwilling to fight the world are carried up by the wind. As a teenager, Alatas and his friends ventured to the rocky platform outside the village, where they discovered pairs of fine lines carved into the cliff—like musical notations, like the veins of wings.
In the autumn of his seventeenth year, bad news arrived from the border, and the youth were swept into endless conflict. Alatas refused to take up arms. On a night when the wind was at its fiercest, he went alone to the rocky platform. The moon was thin that night, like a scale about to break. Placing his hand on the stone carvings, he learned the rhythm of a single line. In that rhythm, he heard his own name echo from within his chest. He softly answered the call, and the wind lifted his feet from the ground. About Anthro Anthro derives from the root of anthropology, meaning “about humans.” For us, it carries two extended senses: human form / human ways — referring both to the forms of humanity and to ways of living. At Anthro, we take the explorer’s view: through objects, we search for traces of mythic humankind and the ways they lived. We believe the human forms found in myth embody the selves that different eras have longed for. These forms may be ultra-ancient or ultra-futuristic, leaping across stories in states of transition. As they move between times, the spiritual world that transcends matter is inscribed into a way of life founded on reverence.
